National Care Trust

Loneliness is one of the most pressing wellbeing challenges in the UK today, affecting people of all ages, backgrounds, and circumstances. It is not simply about being alone; many individuals feel lonely even when surrounded by others. This can influence mental health, physical health, relationships, and a person’s overall ability to cope with daily life. At National Care Trust, we recognise how widespread loneliness has become, and we are committed to offering meaningful, accessible support for anyone who may be struggling with isolation or social disconnection.

Understanding Loneliness

Loneliness does not look the same for everyone. For some, it develops after a major life change—such as moving home, bereavement, retirement, or illness. For others, loneliness is linked to limited social contact, long-term health conditions, caring responsibilities, or challenges with mobility and independence. Younger adults may feel isolated due to social pressure, digital overload, or lack of meaningful connection, while older adults may face fewer social opportunities or reduced confidence in getting out and about.

Loneliness is more than an emotional burden—it can affect focus, sleep, motivation, self-esteem, and overall wellbeing. Over time, persistent loneliness may contribute to anxiety, depression, or increased reliance on health services. This is why early support is essential. Our approach focuses on listening, understanding, and helping people rebuild confidence in forming and maintaining meaningful connections.

In England (October 2023 to March 2024) about 7% of adults (~3.1 million people) reported feeling lonely often or always. *

  • Among adults aged 16-24 the figure was higher at ~10%.

  • Disabled adults reported loneliness at ~15% compared with ~3% for non-disabled adults.

  • Women reported loneliness “often or always” at ~8%, men at ~6%.

Our Approach to Loneliness Support

We believe that loneliness should never be a silent struggle. National Care Trust provides a range of services designed to offer reassurance, encouragement, and practical support—delivered in ways that are easy to access and tailored to individual needs.

Our support is built around three core principles:

1. Connection

Human connection is at the heart of improving wellbeing. Through our programmes, individuals can speak to qualified professionals who understand the emotional impact of loneliness. Whether someone needs a listening ear, guidance on rebuilding social confidence, or help navigating a difficult period, we provide a safe and confidential space to open up.

2. Accessibility

We know that barriers such as mobility issues, distance, stigma, or busy schedules can make it difficult to seek help. To overcome this, we offer online support options that allow individuals to connect from home. This ensures that people can receive the care they need without the stress of travelling or arranging appointments around their daily responsibilities.

3. Practical guidance

Support is not only about conversation. Many people need help understanding why they feel lonely and what steps they can take to feel more connected. Our team offers personalised guidance to build confidence, explore suitable activities, strengthen routines, and create meaningful change.

Why Loneliness Support Matters

No one should feel ashamed of feeling lonely. It is a widespread experience and a natural response to human need. What matters most is having access to the right support at the right time.

Loneliness can also be overlooked because it is not always visible. People often hide their feelings due to embarrassment, fear of judgement, or the belief that loneliness is “a personal problem”. By offering understanding, accessible services, and professional guidance, we aim to remove this stigma and encourage individuals to reach out for help earlier.

Supporting people through loneliness has far-reaching benefits. It can improve emotional wellbeing, reduce the risk of mental health difficulties, strengthen relationships, and help individuals re-engage with their communities. For care providers, supporting staff wellbeing can also enhance job satisfaction, reduce burnout, and improve the quality of care delivered.

Our Commitment

At National Care Trust, we are committed to creating supportive environments where no one feels left behind. Our team works every day to offer guidance, connection, and reassurance to individuals who may feel isolated or overlooked. We understand how difficult it can be to reach out, and we make every effort to ensure our services are welcoming, accessible, and sensitive to personal needs.

Whether someone is experiencing mild loneliness or long-term isolation, we are here to help them navigate their feelings, rebuild their confidence, and take steps towards a more connected life.

If you would like help or want to explore our support options, you are welcome to contact us at any time. You are not alone, and support is always within reach.

This approach supports timely intervention, reduces isolation, and offers peace of mind-ensuring care is delivered safely, respectfully, and responsibly.
