Supporting Safer Communities Across Luton
With the support of £10,000 in National Lottery funding, we delivered a COVID-19 social distancing and community awareness project across
Luton, with a particular focus on engaging Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities.
The project was designed to help communities understand the importance of social distancing and COVID-19 safety measures, while providing practical support in settings where people regularly gathered and social interaction was an important part of community life.

COVID-19 Social Distancing Project
Working with Places of Worship and Faith Communities
A key part of the project was our engagement with places of worship and faith communities across Luton. These settings played an important role in reaching community members and sharing clear, accessible information about COVID-19 safety measures.
We worked with faith leaders, volunteers and community representatives to promote safer practices, including:
Raising awareness of the importance of maintaining social distance.
Supporting places of worship to implement appropriate social distancing arrangements.
Providing clear and accessible COVID-19 health and safety information.
Encouraging worshippers and visitors to follow public health guidance.
Supporting safe queuing, entry and exit arrangements where required.
Promoting responsible behaviour before, during and after worship services.
Engaging community members in conversations about COVID-19 prevention and reducing transmission.
Reaching people who may have experienced language, cultural or communication barriers when accessing public health information.
Reaching Communities Through Trusted Local Networks
We recognised that effective public health messaging works best when it is delivered through trusted community organisations, faith
leaders and local networks.
Our approach therefore focused on working alongside established community and faith organisations across Luton. By engaging directly with places of worship and community representatives, we were able to communicate important information in a culturally sensitive and accessible way.
This created opportunities for community members to ask questions, understand the reasons behind social distancing measures and receive practical guidance that they could share with their families, friends and wider community networks.
Impact of the Project
The National Lottery funding enabled us to take a targeted, community-led approach to COVID-19 prevention.
Our work helped to:
Increase awareness of COVID-19 social distancing requirements.
Support safer environments within participating places of worship and community settings.
Engage BAME communities through trusted local organisations and faith networks.
Provide practical information and guidance to worshippers and community members.
Strengthen collaboration between community organisations, faith leaders and local residents.
Encourage individuals and families to take practical steps to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
A Community-Led Response
The project demonstrated the value of working with
communities rather than simply delivering messages to them.
By building relationships with places of worship, faith
leaders, volunteers and community members, we were able to respond to local
circumstances and ensure that COVID-19 information reached people through
channels they trusted.
The £10,000 National Lottery funding made it possible for us
to deliver this important work at a time when communities were facing
significant uncertainty and disruption.
We are proud to have contributed to the wider effort to
protect residents across Luton and support diverse communities in navigating
the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Thank You
We would like to thank The National Lottery for supporting
this project and our local places of worship, faith organisations and community
partners for their cooperation, commitment and contribution to keeping Luton
communities safer during the COVID-19 pandemic.
