On Wednesday 1 December 2021, a conference was held in London to discuss the ongoing issue of child sexual abuse and explore ways to strengthen awareness, prevention and support for children and young people affected by abuse.
The event brought together professionals from a range of sectors, providing an opportunity to share knowledge, experiences and best practice in tackling child sexual abuse. Attendees included practitioners and representatives from organisations working to safeguard children and respond to concerns around abuse.
A key aim of the conference was not only to raise awareness among those attending, but also to encourage professionals to take the learning, resources and practical actions discussed back into their own workplaces, organisations and communities. By sharing this knowledge with colleagues, partners, families and wider community networks, professionals could help to cascade the learning and messages from the conference, creating a greater and more lasting impact.
The conference highlighted the importance of collective action in tackling child sexual abuse. Professionals were encouraged to use the information and discussions from the event to support conversations within their own communities, increase understanding of the signs and risks of abuse, promote effective safeguarding practices, and help ensure that concerns are recognised and responded to appropriately.
By equipping professionals with knowledge, practical actions and resources that could be shared more widely, the conference sought to extend its impact beyond the event itself. This approach aimed to build greater awareness across communities, strengthen collaboration between professionals and organisations, and ultimately contribute to creating safer environments for children and young people.
The event reinforced the message that tackling child sexual abuse is a shared responsibility and that meaningful change can be achieved when professionals work together, share learning and take positive action within the communities they serve.
